Health Coaching Scope of Practice

What you need to know

I am a member of the UK Health Coaches Association (UKHCA) and am fully insured for my work as a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach (FMCHC).

You can find my Scope of Practice and the UKHCA Scope of Practice below:

health and wellness coaches support their clients in achieving health goals and behavioural change based on their clients’ own goals and consistent with treatment plans as prescribed by individual clients’ professional health care providers.

Health and wellness coaches partner with clients seeking self-directed, lasting changes, aligned with their values, which promote health and wellness and, thereby, enhance well-being. In the course of their work, health and wellness coaches display an unconditional positive regard for their clients and a belief in their capacity for change, honouring the fact that each client is an expert on their own life, while ensuring that all interactions are respectful and non-judgmental.

Functional Medicine Certified Health Coaches (FMHC) are trained to work closely with clients around all of the lifestyle factors (sleep/relaxation, exercise/movement, nutrition, stress, relationships) that influence health. They are experts in behaviour change and employ effective techniques such as motivational interviewing and appreciative inquiry.

The coaching process empowers clients to draw on internal strengths, develop self-knowledge, and embrace self-management strategies in order to make the often-challenging lifestyle changes necessary for optimal health. As an FMCHC, Alison Huband has a solid understanding of the foundations of Functional Medicine and is fully trained to utilise many of the IFM resources, such as the Timeline, Matrix, and Food Plans.

As a client you will understand that Functional Medicine Certified Health Coaches are not medical professionals and do not diagnose conditions, prescribe treatments, or provide psychological therapeutic interventions, however Alison may provide expert guidance in areas in which she holds active, nationally recognised credentials, and may offer resources from nationally recognised authorities and peer-reviewed sources.

As partners and facilitators, health and wellness coaches support their clients in achieving health goals and behavioural change based on their clients’ own goals and consistent with treatment plans as prescribed by individual clients’ professional health care providers. Coaches assist clients to use their insight, personal strengths and resources, goal setting, action steps and accountability toward healthy lifestyle change.

The UKHCA is the professional body for Health and Wellness Coaches for the UK and Ireland. Members of the UKHCA are fully qualified and credentialed professionals who have satisfied robust professional standards and work within a defined scope of practice.
